An afternoon of crafty goodness!

Today I decided to have a craft afternoon, since I have been a bit (very!) slack of the art/craft front for the past few months :S
The result.......some bunting made with vintage lace doilys and some cute fabric!
I thinks it looks quite nice hanging over my fireplace with my antler!!!

A Seagull

For our last project of the year we were given 3 weeks to research and create an artwork.
The subject discipline I was doing was Illustration.
We had to pick any art or design movement we wanted and spend at least a week researching that particular subject. I chose to look at Natural history illustration, in particular Ornithological illustrations (study of birds).
My starting point was the work of Audubon from the 18th and 19th century, then looked at how this type of illustration has changed over the past few hundred years. I also looked at how artists have used taxidermy to accompany this type of illustration.
The aim of my project was to create a show for Sky Arts based on my research topic.
I chose to produce an artifact from the show. I looked at the birds which you found in the city, the dirty, scavengers, opposed to something beautiful and found in the forrest, which is what the majority of natural history drawings are like.
I made this seagull using a wire base, then made feathers out of paper, using newspaper for some parts to reflect the dirty habitat the seagulls of the city live in, filled with rubbish.
I thought i'd display it as you would see any normal taxidermy'd animal.
As well as producing this artifact, I made a poster for the show to promote it, naming it '(Un) Natural History'.

Textile design

So, for the past two weeks i've been studying textile design. the theme for this project was pattern and texture. we had to basically go and find pattern and texture in certain objects/forms. i chose to look at different features of buildings and after many sketches i settled on two aspects to look at; chimney pots - mainly the silhouette they create against the sky, and these wee pyramid things on top of the art school roof!
we had to then develop these ideas into patterns which were then made on a large scale, 2meter strips of wall paper and A1 sheets of paper.
these are photographs of my final outcomes.

Great Lake Swimmers - Pulling On A Line [Official Music Video]

I want to sit in a boat in the middle of the forest at night surrounded by cool lamps.
oh, wouldn't that be grand?

Boy and his Pram

So for the past two weeks we got to choose which subject we studied, I chose Illustration within the communication design block. We were each given a narrative written by someone else in the class based on a photo we were each given, so no two projects were the same. We then had to create an artwork (Illustration, Graphic design or animation ).
My narrative was about a wee boy with and old fashioned pram that had a doll and a teddy inside it. This was set in the war time approx 1940s. He was standing in a village next to a house with a crumbling brick wall and a washing line. there were also factories in the background producing lots of smoke so you couldn't really see much of the background. The boy looks very sad and its quite dull and sombre
My Artwork came about by much research and experimentation with different ideas. I decided to make the scene by making the houses, the boy and the pram into toys that you would be able to interact with. This I feel helps the viewer sympathise with the boy and want to nurture him and his destructed environment.
